Microsoft promises to wow people who are upgrading from Windows XP to its new operating system, but with the joys of Windows Vista comes plenty of pain.

Falling into the Vista trap
By Tim Weber
Business editor, BBC News website

Microsoft promises to wow people who are upgrading from Windows XP to its new operating system, but with the joys of Windows Vista comes plenty of pain.

The full article can be read here.

The bottom line from BTC is …. existing PC’s are not ready for Vista nor will they really ever be. The best advice is to wait until you are ready to upgrade your PC and then get a truly Vista compatible machine with Vista pre-installed by the PC maker.

Still undeterred ? Then call BTC and we’ll suggest the right new PC to run Vista on.

BTC Consulting supports the Town of Lagrange computer systems...

BTC Consulting was selected to upgrade and support the Town of Lagrange’s networked computer systems.

The Town Supervisor, George Wade and the Town Board met and decided to select BTC to complete an upgrade to their computer systems and provide continuing support.

The town had an aging server and network system that was in dire need of attention. BTC replaced their server, upgraded their network equipment, replaced a number of old PC’s and solved a myriad of connection and performance problems that had been plauging the town for some time.

The town has a complex operation and a growing community population that depends on the Town to provide services and support for the local community. The Town’s operations include the Town Clerk’s Office for licensing and information, the Courts for community judicial services, the Planning and Zoning office for property zoning administration and building permits and inspections, the Recreation Department for management of all the town recreational facilities and programs and the Highway Department to maintain all the Town’s Roadways. And lest you forget their is an Accounting Office that keeps the town finances in order.

They now have a reliable high performance computer system that will support their continued efforts to provide top quality services to the Town of Lagrange community.

Do you know a local town government that needs help ? BTC Consulting supports the Town of Washington too….contact BTC Consulting at 914-456-5360.

Next we'll remove all that nasty Adware...

Adware is software and software elements that download to your PC while you are surfing the web. They can take the form of cookies, Active X controls, java applications, and a number of other types. These software elements save information about you, and some “phone home” to web servers that want to track your internet activities. Adware can sometimes install itself without your knowledge and sometimes you install it inadvertantly by clicking on pop up windows that promise everything from a virus free computer, to viagra or worse.

Even some of the most well known and supposedly safe web sites install Adware elements when you surf to their pages. The problem with these are that they take up space on your computer, they use up system resources and they report information about you that you may not want anyone else to know. I call it simply an invasion of privacy.

You pick up these little “bugs” every time you surf the internet. So I recommend that once a week you run an Adware removal utility to keep these “insects” at bay.

I use Lavasoft’s Adaware SE Personal Edition. You can download it here.

After you have downloaded the file to your desktop so you can find it, double click on the downloaded file and follow the instructions to install. During the install process you will be asked if you want to check for updates. Do this so that the software is checking your computer based on the most currently available adware signatures. This is just like anti-virus software and its important to keep these adware definitions up to date.

Now run the software and scan your computer for adware threats. When the scan is complete, highlight all the found threats and click the next button and the program will remove them from your computer.

There you are all cleaned up and ready to surf again. Remember to run the software weekly to keep your computer clean.

Not sure how to do this? If you need assistance cleaning adware from your computer contact BTC Consulting and we’ll help.

Next Tip: #4 Browser Hijacks…
